Book Recommendations

Parents often ask me to recommend a book, or books, that they could read as a place to begin their journey of parenting a child on the autism spectrum. Here is a list of the books I have reviewed, highly respected authors of autism related books, and some additional books to look at on your own. Most of these books are merely a place to begin. Each one has links to helpful websites and their own book recommendations as well.

Meanwhile there is a terrific blog called Special Needs Book Review. This is the place to go to find the best books that can help you and/or your child.

I do hope you'll consider reading, "Asperkids: An Insider's Guide to Loving, Understanding and Teaching Children with Asperger Syndrome" (Jessica Kinsgley Publishers, 2012), for which I was lucky enough to win the 2012 Temple
Grandin Award and GRASP DSM Medal. So far, I'm thrilled to report all 5-star ratings by readers, and some really humbling testimony. As an Aspie with three Asperkids of my own, I'm proud to have the chance to offer my "insider" perspectives to all who love an Asperkid.

WELCOME

Welcome to my blog. I am the mother of two children with asperger's syndrome. The oldest in fact was diagnosed with PDD-NOS at the age of five. He is now a college graduate and will be starting a masters program Fall 2013. His younger brother is a college junior. It has been a long road and not so easy all the time. But I never gave up and I never will until my boys have the future of their choosing.

I will be writing updates on situations answering the age-old questions of "who, what, where, when and how" they had been handled. I may even tell a funny or two. I am not a professional. I am a parent writing about my adventures in raising two very different boys on the autism spectrum. I sincerely hope that something I pen here helps those who visit. If you have a question don't be afraid to ask.

But if you are looking for quick answers, a magic pill or someone to tell you its all the other guys responsibility, you will not find that here. You will not find woe-is-me parenting either. What you will find here is a shoulder, a support system and a look at the practical realities of raising a child on the autism spectrum and integrating them into the real world.

Remember not to project what will be, take each day, each moment, in its own time; then one day you will look back and see just how far your child has come.

LEGEND

For those who are new to this blog below are the acronyms and who they belong to:

WoS aka hubby: Wise Old Sage. Name given to the husband by the boys..as opposed to me whom they just refer to as a pain in the tuchas

HSB aka highschoolboy: my younger son who is now a high school graduate.

CM1 aka collegeman: this is a moniker for my oldest who is a college graduate. We are calling him collegeman1 because his brother is collegeman2. However, CM1 is starting a masters graduate program this fall and will now, from 5/18/13, be referred to as Mr. GS or Mr. Graduate Student.

CM2 aka HSB: formerly highschoolboy who is now a college junior. He is known as collegeman2. But don't tell him, he thinks nicknaming him collegeman is idiotic, sophomoric and just plain dumb. So we will keep this just between us.
